1. 구름이 (걷히다)

The rain clouds are breaking (up).
After a while, the clouds broke, and the sun came out again.

 

2. (파업을) 끝내다. 중지시키다.

We are discussing steps to break the strike.
The governor is considering the use of state troops the break the strike.

 

3. (여행 구간을) 나누다.

We decided to break the trip into three legs.  <-- legs : 여행의 구간을 나타냄
We broke the trip into two days.

 

4. (열이) 내리다.

I think the fever is breaking.
Her fever broke last night.

 

5. (법 or 규정) 위반하다.

I broke no rules <-- 나는 규정을 위반한것이 없다. 
You can't break the law for a story <-- store : 취재

 

6. (하던 일을) 잠시 쉬다.

Let's break for lunch. <-- 점심 먹게 쉽시다.
We'll break for coffee at 10. <-- 10시에 커피타임 가지자!

 

7. (안 좋은 소식을) 전하다.

I'm at a loss how to break the news to her. <-- at a loss : 어찌할 바를 모르다. / break the new to ~ : (안좋은 소식)을 전하다.
I broke the news to her yesterday.

 

8. (날씨가) 풀리다.

The cold spell will break soon.  <-- cold spell or cold wave : (며칠째 이어지는) 한파 / cold weather : (오늘만) 추운 날씨
Let's hope the weather will break soon.

 

9. (지폐를) 바꾸다.

Can you break a hundred-dollar bill?
I don't have enough cash to break a hundred-dollar bill.
